Making or assembling something with your own hands at home is a rewarding experience in and of itself. However, when you can the give that creation as a gift to another person and watch them smile as they open it for the first time, that is just icing on the cake.
An exciting way to keep yourself busy while sharpening your creative skills is to make your own gift baskets. The wonderful thing about baskets is that you can make them to fit just about any theme you can imagine. And, you can give your creations to men, women, and children. Best friends, neighbors, co-workers and casual acquaintances alike will appreciate a well-made, thoughtful gift basket.
If you are interested in creating your own gift baskets, here are ideas for creating gift baskets at home in 5 steps:
1. Spark your creativity:
You will want each basket idea you have to be a true original. Your baskets should stand out one from the next, and at the same time be unique to other baskets you have seen before. To get that kind of creativity going, you will want to get inspired. Watch a favorite movie, read a special passage from a book you love, or listen to inspiring music. See what images and ideas come to mind and write them down.
2. Gather your supplies (on the cheap):
Next, it is time to go out and start getting your supplies together to make your baskets. The dollar store is a great place to start. Buy yourself various colors of cellophane wrap, basket filler like shredded paper, and small items that can adorn the main gifts. Try to choose items that can fit with multiple different basket themes. Economizing by buying in bulk at this stage is important.
3. Keep your eyes peeled for great baskets and other containers:
Meanwhile, when you are out and about at stores, craft shops, and even garage sales, keep your eyes open for baskets and other containers you can use to contain your baskets. It is okay to get used items, especially if they have some character. Just make sure they are free from mold, rot or dirt that would be unsightly and unpleasant for the recipient.
4. Buy some of the little touches that make a good gift basket great:
Next, look for items you can use as finishing touches for your baskets, such as little stickers, charms, ribbons, bows, and tiny ornaments. It is these little touches that turn a good basket into a great one.
5. Set up an assembly workspace at home:
Now, it is time to get your workspace ready at home. While a dining room table or folding card table will do nicely, it would be idea if you could find a place where you could set up a dedicated space in which to work. That way, you will be able to set up all of your basket-making items in one place and not worry about having to get them out when the mood strikes you - only to have to put everything away when you are done.
Plus, with a dedicated space, you can work on your creations a little at a time.
